This project is a collection of sound postcards from Newfoundland, aural objects framed by silence, in the real space of thisisnotashop, Benburb Street. The sound happens within a multi-channel aural field.

Auralog is a collaborative project by Anthony Kelly, Slavek Kwi, Seán McCrum and David Stalling.

To investigate a longer-term project, Shorelines, we travelled to Newfoundland during June 2008 where we collaborated with a group of Canadian artists and made numerous sound recordings. By presenting the audio postcards we seek to relate the sounds and timeframe of Newfoundland to the specific place of thisisnotashop and to redefine the experience of space and time through electronic and actual sound.

The Canadian artists, Angela Antle, Pierre LeBlanc and Anne Troake, will be sending their audio postcards as part of this event.

Since 2003, Dublin based artists Anthony Kelly and David Stalling have been collaborating on a series of sound and visual pieces which have been widely exhibited; their recorded work has been released on the sound art label farpointrecordings.com, while a track from their Treehouse EP was released on the Wire Tapper series issued with Wire Magazine. Kelly and Stalling were recently commissioned by the Arts Council of Ireland to create the sound art exhibition Urban Utopias.

Seán McCrum studied Classics at Trinity College Dublin between 1967 and 1971. He went on to work in The Applied Arts and Fine Arts Departments of the Ulster Museum from 1971-1977 and was Director of The Douglas Hyde Gallery, Dublin from 1977 to 1982. McCrum then worked as a writer and critic until 1987, contributing to Irish and international publications and media. Since then he has worked as an independent curator, originating, funding, administering and designing various cultural projects, ranging from individual events to long-term national and international exchange programmes.

thisisnotashop was started by Aideen Darcy in 2006, with Jessamyn Fiore joining her the following year. A small former shop on an empty street was ‘recycled’ to counter the commercial trend of the time and since then it has become a space for artists from various backgrounds to perform and exhibit their sound installations, screenings and selected bodies of work. Viewed by local artists as not just ‘open for business’ but ‘open to interpretation’, thisisnotashop offers transparency and a welcome for all. www.thisisnotashop.com
