DEAF 2008

With another DEAF over, I thought I’d take a few words to say a big thanks to everybody who supported us this year. For 2008, I think we succeeded in putting together our most comprehensive programme to date, and we were truly gratified by the unprecedented amount of goodwill we received from audiences, artists and fellow promoters alike.

Unfortunately our closing night event was subject to some problems and it’s this issue that I want to chiefly address here.

We appreciate that a substantial number of people were extremely disappointed at being unable to get in to the Village to see Laurent Garnier. We had planned this as a multi-stage event with a total capacity of 1200, and sold 1130 tickets.

The problem arose because there wasn’t as much movement between the three stages as we had expected. This was compounded by the fact that the headline act for our other main stage was unable to perform on the night due to illness, and thus large numbers of people decided to stay in the Village for the entire evening, instead of heading across to check out Whelans at some point.

In short, we’d planned on making this multi-stage idea really work for us, but unfortunately that set-up ended up working against us – badly. Suffice to say we won’t be trying that one again!

Since then, a full list of all those who were unable to access the Village for Laurent Garnier’s set was compiled, and a full refund given to all affected parties, along with my profound apology on behalf of the festival.

On that point, I’d like to note that I’m very grateful for the generally understanding tone of the communications we received from those who were disappointed on the night, and I hope that this one unfortunate incident doesn’t put our normally good relationship with our audience in jeopardy. DEAF is not-for-profit organisation and we’re heavily dependent on the continued support of the people who attend our events every year. So once again: many thanks for your patience and for your understanding.

While a little earlier the music documentary “Wild Combination – A Portrait of Arthur Russell” will be screened upstairs in 4 Dame Lane at 7pm & only 5euro. Arthur Russell was a classically trained cellist who ended up losing himself in the rhythms and polymorphous sexuality of 1970s New York disco culture.

His list of collaborators stretched from celebrated beat poet Allen Ginsberg to minimalist composer Philip Glass, with names like David Byrne (Talking Heads), Wave Music founder Francois K and legendary Studio 54/Gallery DJ Nicky Siano dotted in-between. Tragically, Arthur died from AIDS related complications in 1992 before the recent resurgence of interest in his work. Wild Combination explores the compelling cultural history of New York in the 1970s and ’80s, the experience of being gay and confronting AIDS, and the cathartic process of making art and pursuing popular success at a time when those goals were mutually attainable.

If you fancy heading to Sweettalk you will find Steinski & Maser discussing their work. And later, there are plenty of club events from 11pm; after Nurse you can stay on for Mad EP & Ebola plus Ultradyne will be live at the The Underground. And if you fancy checking out some homegrown acts, the Bar Weekenders kick off tonight also from 5pm with plenty of free dj sets & live acts in Southwilliam Bar, Globe Bar, Solas, Bia Bar, The Bernard Shaw & Anseo.

All the gallery shows begin today around the city so make sure to pop into the Thisisnotashop, the Joinery, the Joy, Sebastian Guinness Gallery, Pallas Contemporary Projects or the Gallery of Photography for some wonderful sound & visual exhibits.

Rune Grammofon label showcase - In the Country & Susanna

Note Productions is pleased to present a special double bill of two of the most captivating new acts from Norway, piano trio In The Country and singer Susanna on Saturday 25th at Whelan’s - 20euro www.tickets.ie

In The Country, are a startling piano trio led by Morten Qvenild. The trio’s remarkable chamber jazz minatures mark them out as one of the most interesting European groups at work today. Pianist Morten Qvenild is best known as one half of atmospheric duo Susanna and the Magical Orchestra and also a member of Jaga Jazzist, Shining, The National Bank, and Solveig Slettahjell’s Slow Motion Orchestra. The band’s European classical influences such as Oliver Messiaen and Morton Feldman and electronic roots are clear on their sparse and minimal albums, This Was The Pace Of My Heartbeat and Losing Stones, Collecting Bones (Rune Grammofon). Yet Qvenild also has an attraction to unabashed melody and shadowy drama making this lyrical jazz for the small hours. In The Country are Morten Qvenild (piano) Roger Arntzen (bass) and Pål Hausken (drums). www.myspace.com/inthecountrytrio

Susanna (of Susanna and The Magical Orchestra) showcases her solo album, Sonata Mix Dwarf Cosmos (Rune Grammafon). Continuing the slow-burn intensity of her Magical Orchestra interpretations of Jolene and Love Will Tear Us Apart on Melody Mountain (Rune Grammofon), her new solo work is achingly lovely, set simply for voice and piano, full of stark, minimalist, slightly cosmic compositions that hang like fairy lights around her gorgeous voice, images of lost lovers and approaching seasons move between feelings of sorrow and expectation. While her recordings are filled with brooding electronics by Deathprod (aka Helge Sten), her new live band is a remarkable largely acoustic trio. Susanna are Susanna (vocals), Helge Sten (guitars and electronics), Paal Hausken (drums). www.myspace.com/susannasonata
