Beijing-born Wu Fei is a rising star in classical / improvisational Chinese music. A student since the age of six of the ancient guzheng (the parent instrument of the Japanese koto) and a graduate of the China Conservatory of Music, Wu has since set about finding meeting-points between Chinese traditional and contemporary western music.
Currently resident in the US, Wu has composed music for solo instruments, string quartets, choirs, orchestras, modern and traditional dance, film, and various chamber ensembles, and her compositions have been performed from London to Taipei, and from New York to Beijing.
Her virtuoso improvisational performances have also attracted the attention of innumerable composers and artists, not the least of whom Fred Frith (founding member of English avant-rock group Henry Cow) described her playing as “breath-taking”.
