COSMIC SHENGGY
Beijing's Shenggy stands out as a leading light in the new generation of avant-garde improvisers emerging from China, and also as the first female 'noise' pioneer in the country.
Currently London-based where she is studying philosophy and art, Shenggy started her music career in 1998 at the age of 16, drumming for Beijing indie/rock legends Hang On The Box, but since 2003, she has been increasingly preoccupied with exploring what she describes as 'cosmic industrial noise'ù, employing electronics, voice, synths, and tape loops to realise a vision of sound-in-space inspired by her father's work for the Chinese government's space programme.
More terrestrial inspiration comes from a variety of sources including Einsturzende Neubauten, Throbbing Gristle, Pierre Henry, John Cage, and the gu zheng masters of Chinese classical music. Currently working on a number of projects, Shenggy has just finished recording an album with partner Xiao Wang (as 'White') at Blixa Bargeld's studio in Berlin, with the resulting work to be released in 2008.
