BOREDOMS
Described as occupying an ever-shifting space somewhere between Sun Ra and Butthole Surfers, the legendary Boredoms first emerged out of their native Japan into the wider western consciousness in the early ‘90s thanks to their relationship with admiring American bands such as Sonic Youth and Nirvana.
Drawing upon influences from punk, noise, and psychedelic, Boredoms’ outstanding performances at events such as Lollapalooza (and subsequent patronage from influential names such as Steve Albini and John Zorn) undoubtedly helped open up new audiences in the west to their music, but the band’s continued dedication to the extreme in their art subsequently proved too difficult a marketing challenge for an increasingly conservative US rock music industry to maintain.
With the first incarnation of the band dating (arguably) back to 1982 and an ever-changing line-up of contributors down through the years, it should come as no surprise that rumours of break-ups have persisted for almost as long as the band has existed, but Boredoms re-emerged from Japan in 2005 with a US release, and have since begun since touring again.
Led by enigmatic singer Yamantaka Eye, the band have been incorporating strong influences from repetitive minimal electronica into their sound in recent years, with a particular focus on heavy tribal percussion; true to their dedication to the extreme, a performance in New York’s Brooklyn Bridge Park in July 2007 saw them employ a staggering 77 drummers.
