PAMELIA KURSTIN
California-born of Thai ancestry, Pamelia Kurstin’s vibrant personality and extraordinary musical talent have combined to bring this most curious of musical instruments to a wider audience in recent years.
Played without being touched,
by moving the hands around two antennae that control the pitch
and volume of an electric signal, the theremin was invented
in 1919, the product of Russian government-sponsored research.
Bolshevik leader Lenin hailed it as a triumph of Soviet achievement
and as the foundation of a new ‘electronic music’.
Inspired by a 1997 documentary by Steve Martin, Kurstin began to study the theremin, and her eclectic style and innovative approach have seen her since collaborate with David Byrne, appear on Saturday Night Live in the US, and release an album for John Zorn’s Tzadik label.
