SHWANTOLOGY
Dublin-based collective The Fear jumped at the opportunity to fashion a special one-off DJ-performance for this year’s Asian theme at DEAF. Shwantology: Asia is an extension of one of their many ongoing projects and will feature selections of folk music, soundtrack and field recordings from India, Japan, China, South-east Asia and the Indonesian archipelago, combined with modern avant-garde and contemporary compositions inspired by Asian musical traditions and concepts.
Featuring the work of Asian and near-Eastern composers such as Toru Takemitsu, Alireza Mashayekhi and Ilhan Mimaroglu alongside European artists directly influenced by Eastern ideas such as Oliver Messiaen and John Cage, Shwantology: Asia also promises to incorporate some more oblique Asian/Western Avant Garde connections, including the likes of Penderecki, Terry Reilly, John Hassel, La Monte Young, Boulez, along with a host of other modern experimental composers.
With 3-4 sound sources for each DJ, and a wealth of archived music at hand, The Fear will employ CD and vinyl turntables, mixing software and outboard effects to generate a unique live mix.
