Kevin Barry Room, National Concert Hall, Earlsfort Terrace, Dublin 2

2 – 5pm               FREE

Aimed at composers, musicians, producers and audio technicians who would like to learn more about the production of spatial music, these three workshops are free of charge. (Places are limited and tickets must be pre-booked. Contact spatialmc@gmail.com)

 1. Spatial Audio Production – Spatial Music Collective

Addressing the production of spatial audio using popular music production platforms such as Pro Tools, Cubase, Logic and Ableton Live, this workshop will show a basic approach to creating a quadraphonic, 5.1 or multi-channel mix using various sequencers and musical examples. Different mixing strategies and aesthetic approaches to surround-sound mixing will be discussed and demonstrated.

2. Ambisonics Workshop – Enda Bates

Ambisonics is an effective spatial audio production format which has a number of advantages over traditional pair-wise panning techniques.  This workshop will illustrate how this technique can be implemented using free VST plugins and the shareware sequencer Reaper.  The positioning and movement of sounds with Ambisonics and the differences between this technique and other methods will be demonstrated.

3. Spatial Music Aesthetics – Linda Buckley

Focusing on aesthetic aspects of spatial music composition, this workshop will look at historical examples (both acoustic and electronic) alongside some original compositions by the presenting composer. The talk will also incorporate aspects of psychoacoustics, i.e. the listener’s perception of sound when working with spatial sound and music.
