With just two days and nights to go until it’s over, we’re nearing the end of this years DEAF. It’s been an amazing festival, possibly our best to date and certainly our most well attended since we started the festival eight years ago. So just before we wrap up this year we’d like to let you all know that this is going to be our very last DEAF! All things considered we’ve decided to finish up on a high note and move on to the other projects that we’re anxious to get off the ground. So it’s certainly not the last you’ve heard of us!!

We’re delighted to have Detroit’s Electro Bass pioneers AUX 88 performing live in the main room. The AUXMEN played at the first ever DEAF event at the Guinness Storehouse so it’s more than fitting that they’ll be here to help us wrap DEAF up on Saturday night. They have also been hugely influential for so many of the artists who have performed for DEAF over the years. Also playing will be Jerome Hill, Rob Hall, Mark Broom, Toirse and a bunch of other DJs. The venue has just been taking over by Johnny Moy and has just been renovated. We’ll be putting extra sound into both rooms especially for the night !!

Detroit electro pioneers Aux 88 bring the curtain down on DEAF 2009, performing live as part of their ‘Mad Scientist Tour’, dropping old and future electro classics from their esteemed catalogue. AUX 88, Tom Tom (Tommy Hamilton) and Keith Tucker (DJ K1) were originally formed as “RX-7″ in 1985. The group also formed another project known as Sight Beyond Sight, before forming AUX 88 in 1993. In 1995, Tucker went solo and Hamilton continued as Aux 88 together with dancer William “BJ” Smith. After Smith left in 1988, Aux 88 became Hamilton’s solo project. Tucker later rejoined the band.

Aux 88 have released a string of singles, primarily on Direct Beat Records. Their debut album ‘Is It Man or Machine?’ came out in 1996, followed by Hamilton’s solo project Xeo-Genetic (1998) which won for Detroit Music Awards for Best Artist and Best Recording. In 1999 Aux 8 released a CD in the Electro Boogie series of mixed albums. In 2005 Aux 88 released their self-titled third album Aux 88.

Aux 88 have also released music under the aliases Aux Men and Alien FM.

Mark Broom

Also performing is acid house veteran Mark Broom, a pivotal figure in the development of house and techno in the UK since its inception, as his releases on a diverse range of releases attest, including Mo’ Wax, D1, 20/20 Vision, Pure Plastic and many more. Further support comes from Educution, whose string of funk-inspired EPs on D1has been hailed as some of the most unique techno/house material of recent years.

Rob Hall

Rob began his career at techno night Megatripolis held weekly at the legendary London venue ‘Heaven’. His first of many appearances there was with Autechre in the summer of 1992. Since then Rob has played both ends of the spectrum in the UK, from small crowds in intimate venues to huge numbers at clubs and festivals across the world. Rob has also contributed to the Gescom project; a collective that includes a diverse range of producers that formed the backbone of the highly revered and respected Skam Recordings, the label where Rob has worked as part of a small but dedicated team. Recently Rob has become a regular fixture at Berghain in Berlin, currently regarded as one of the best techno clubs in the world. It is a testament to his belief, passion and uncompromising stance that he is now established here; and his peers would probably suggest “it’s about time”.

Jerome Hill

Jerome Hill started DJing in 1990 and since his first residency on the infamous ‘90s soundsystem ‘JIBA‘, playing illegal warehouse parties across London and the UK he has bought his own unique take on electronic dance music to world renowned hotspots including Tresor (Berlin), House of God (Birmingham), Eurobeat 2000 (London), Circuito (Sao Paulo) and Glade Festival (UK); is resident at UglyFunk and BLOC Weekend and co runs ‘Swerved’ in London. Jerome has played tiny sweatboxes and massive clubs and festivals all around the world from Japan to Venezuala, Poland to Malta with a special love for Brasil where he played in over 40 towns and cities including to 20,000 people at the 2004 A.M.E. parade in Sao Paulo.For seven years ending in 2004 he managed Camden Town’s ‘Dragon Disks’and ‘Trackheads’ record shops, punting out all manor of weird and wonderful music to London and it’s visitors. His label “Don’t” has been releasing maverick technoid music since 2000 and shows no sign of slowing down. His productions can be found on many other labels. His eclecticity and genuine love of music enables him to spin virtually any style with integrity… from thundering techno and old skool, right through to low slung funk, dancehall and party hiphop…

3epKano compound their reputation for subtle invention and original composition with a specially composed performance for Benjamin Christensen’s 1922 documentary ‘Haxan: Witchcraft Through the Ages. This concert aims to bring together both the long term fans and the newly-initiated for a celebration of the pioneering work of two of minimalism’s greatest composers: Steve Reich and Philip Glass. Their pioneering influence extends through the music of The Velvet Underground, Pink Floyd, Brian Eno, Glenn Branca, Sonic Youth, Mogwai, Claude Young, Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, Orbital and Aphex Twin – amongst countless others.

Attendees at the concert are encouraged to circulate in the space, seating themselves at the various stages around the room to experience small ensemble and solo performances of seminal Reich works.

The second half of the concert will consist of a screening of Philip Glass’s ‘Koyaanisqatsi: Life out of Balance’. Directed by Godfrey Reggio, with cinematography by Ron Frike, this film was premiered in Radio City Music Hall in October 1982, but was out of print for most of the ‚’90s due to copyright issues. Crash Ensemble

Since its first sold-out concert in Dublin in autumn 1997, Crash Ensemble has attracted enthusiastic audiences for its experimental blend of music, video and electronics. The group is interdisciplinary in outlook, and considers its sound engineers, technicians and video makers as much a part of the enterprise as the musicians.

Crash Ensemble has worked with many noted names in world contemporary music (including Terry Riley, Gerald Barry, Steve Reich, Kevin Volans, Gavin Bryars, David Lang and Louis Andreissen), and has travelled around the world promoting Irish new music. 2008 saw live performances in Ireland (Electric Picnic Рthe soundtrack to Gerard Stembridges feature film ‘Alarm’), Australia (Canberra International Music Festival), USA (Bang on a Can Marathon NYC) and Portugal (Musica Viva Lisbon).

2010 will see work with Grammy Award-winning Soprano Dawn Upshaw – who has commissioned Donnacha Dennehy to write a new work for the Crash Ensemble.

Other projects include a new opera by Dennehy (to be directed by Selina Cartmell), a new multimedia work by Daniel Figgis, collaborations with DEAF, Dublin Dance Festival and the RTE Living Music Festival, and an ambitious tour of the US in Spring 2010, to feature works by Riley, Lang and Dennehy with traditional Irish vocalist Iarla O’Lionard.

This bank holiday Sunday at DEAF marks the debut Irish live appearance of Planetary Assault Systems, the legendary project of London producer Luke Slater. Having supplied some of the most truly outstanding music in techno history, PAS have marked 2009 with a new album ‘Temporary Suspension’ on Ostgut Ton, which has been one of the year’s highlight releases. While Slater leaves behind him a trail of memorable sets in Dublin, this is the debut Irish performance of Planetary Assault Systems Live. Joined by current PAS member Christos Deligiannis, we anticipate this show to be fully worth the 15 year wait!

Also appearing on the bill and playing live are Berlin duo Ancient Methods – one of the most enigmatic new acts to have emerged over the last few years.

Their sound is described in some quarters as ‘pitch black techno war funk’ and in just four releases on their Ancient Methods label, they have established themselves as one of the shining lights of today’s scene. Read their first ever interview, here on the Earwiggle blog:

For this year’s opening night DEAF has the honour of presenting the debut Irish performance of the wonderful Soap & Skin, aka eighteen year old Anja Plaschg. Having grown up on a pork farm in the small village of Gnas in rural Austria, Anja’s spellbinding live performances have been stunning audiences and filling concert halls across Europe.She performs alone, with a grand piano and electronics, her breathtaking vocals displaying a depth of talent rarely seen in such a young artist. While many have likened her to both Bjork and Nico, perhaps Cat Power and Antony and the Johnsons are more suitable comparisons, as like theirs, Anja’s melancholic compositions are truly the music of the outsider.

Very special guest on the night is ATP recordings artistAlexander Tucker. One of the Uk’s most original and exciting artist of the last decade, Tucker takes the British folk tradition deep into the future, twisting and weaving it with drone metal and electronica. While many musicians currently practice live looping, none do it with the hypnotic beauty of Tucker, whose mandolin, acoustic guitar, fantastic voice and bank of pedals create soundscapes which completely mesmerize.

Two years ago, Irish jungle/drum n bass pioneer Naphta delivered his blueprint for the sound that he’d represented through ten years as Bassbin’s original resident DJ. The album ‘Long Time Burning’ both garnered critical acclaim, and went on to lay the foundation for a new Irish-based vinyl label, ‘Ruff Revival’. Since then, only last year’s ‘A Word About Violence’ on DEAF’s compilation CD provided any clue as to what was next.

Now D1 is proud to present the launch of Naphta’s latest work. Drawing upon his skills at sample selection and manipulation, ‘democracy. now’ both maps out a new narrative environment that begs further musical exploration – and offers an unflinching engagement with the overtly political that is rarely heard in music these days.

More than two years in the making, this impressionistic hour-long piece draws upon received sound from forty years of war, recycling and re-contextualising audio culled from films, documentaries and video uploads into a rhythmically and atmospherically engaging trip; one that veers from the darkly humorous, to the simply dark.

Admission to this event includes a free copy of the double-pack vinyl, plus complimentary beers. Attendees are asked to arrive by 7.30pm promptly, whereupon ‘democracy.now’ will be played in full for the first time. (Please note that the album is approximately one hour long, so we ask that you help keep the listening experience undisturbed for others).

A short Q&A with Naphta will follow afterwards, where he’ll address any questions or observations that might arise from this ‘audio screening’. As this event will be seated, capacity is limited. Tickets cost €10 and are available from Road Records, City Discs, and Tickets.ie
