Surgeon

Surgeon has done an exclusive mix for this year’s DEAF, giving us a preview of what to expect when he performs at this year’s festival

Check out the mix HERE

Since exploding onto the techno scene in 1995, Anthony Child has been remoulding contemporary techno. Landmark releases on Counterbalance, Dynamic Tension and Tresor saw his production skills grow, and as a DJ he has evolved in equal measure, mixing up house, techno, dubstep, reggae, drum n bass and vintage avant-garde electronica with a cinematic sensibility. Surgeon’s sets have also always been notable for experimentation with new DJ technologies, increasingly blurring the line between DJ set and live performance. Oblivious to current trends (although often helping to set them), the breadth of Surgeon’s approach to mixing continues to win him new converts from beyond the confines of the techno scene.

Fran HartnettFran Hartnett

Fran Hartnett is one of the most instantly recognisable faces on Dublin’s techno scene. Through many years of DJ-ing at countless clubs, one-off events and raves, Fran enjoyed massive popularity under his then alias of ‘Azrael’. As his own music began to mature, he eventually moved away from this moniker, and by 2007 made his transition to playing live, something that he has been doing regularly around the country since.

Known for his penchant towards deeper and darker industrial tinged techno, Fran’s tastes are also rooted in ambient and experimental electronic sounds – flavours very much apparent in his powerful hardware based live sets.

2009 marked the release of three new remixes – of Orlando Voorn, Itokim and Julian Eustace respectively – while an original track ‘Alpha’ appears on Mantrap’s ‘Trapdoor Material’ series. Anyone who witnessed Fran’s awesome live set at Life Festival this year will know what type of killer music he has in his artillery, and going by this schedule for releases so far, it seems he is finally ready to unleash it!

Jamie Behan

Over the past decade Jamie Behan has established himself as one of Ireland’s foremost techno DJs.  He has played an integral part in the development of the Irish techno scene, from his own clubnights at the legendary Sir Henrys in Cork to regular headline slots at clubs across Ireland and beyond, rocking dancefloors from the UK to Europe to the Middle East. 2008 saw Jamie sign to Real Bookings, a worldwide Dj agency where he takes his place on a roster that includes the likes of Dj Bone, Juan Atkins, Orlando Voorn, and Aux 88. In 2008 he set-up his own label, ‘Bastardo Electrico’ which has garnered support and plaudits from the likes of Dave Clarke. Although the primary focus of the label is dirty, quirky underground techno it is also a reaction against the trend of pigeonholing music into ever increasingly limited sub-genres.

With previous and forthcoming releases from artists such as Dj Bone, Sunil Sharpe, Paul Mac, Vince Watson, Marco Bernardi, Jeroen Search, alongside Jamie himself, it shows that you can have a continuity of atmosphere and attitude across a diverse range of releases. In line with the ethos of his label, Jamie’s DJ sets are a fast 3-deck fusion of influences that refuse to be pigeon-holed into a particular sound yet at the same time are grounded in a kind of dark electronic funk that moves from Detroit to Chicago via Europe, incorporating techno, minimal, electro, and house, all twisted together into a mutant groove, an eclectic fusion of sound which he showcases on releases for Subject Detroit, Nice and Nasty, Static, and his own label.

Conan O’ Donnell

Conan O’Donnell has long been associated with the Electric City crew in Dublin and has been playing in clubs around the city for the last 5 years. He has warmed up for Deetron, Dj Distance and Si Begg to name but a few and is well known for his energetic and technically sound DJ style. Expect to hear fresh techno sounds cut up with electro and dubstep from one of Dublin’s brightest DJ talents.
